The history of Mahabalipuram dates back to the ancient time when the Pallavas ruled it. Their earlier kings were followers of the Jain religion but his came to an end when Mahendra Verman I (600-630 AD) was converted to Shaivism. Most of the rock carvings and temples were completed during the reigns of Narsimha Verman I (630-668 A.D.) and Narsimha Verman II (700-728 A.D.).
