Kaziranga
WomenIt was early in the 20th century that the British
government woke up to the plight of the one-horned rhino. But the damage had been done and very few of them are found in the wet lands of Assam. But efforts were made to save what ever was left. In 1908 Kaziranga was declared a reserve forest officially closed for shooting.

Park Population:
The wildlife population of the park includes Elephants, Indian Bisons, Swamp Deer, Sambhars, Hog Deer, Sloth Bears, Tigers, Leopard Cats, Jungle Cats, Hog Badgers, Capped Langurs, Hoolock Gibbons, Pigs, Jackals, Porcupines, Pythons, Buffaloes and of course the one horned Rhinoceros. Pelican, Duck, Geese, Hornbill, Ibis, Cormorant, Egret, Heron, Black Necked Stork, lesser adjutants, ring tailed fishing eagles are also in plenty in the park. During winters a large number of migratory birds visit the park.

How to Reach:
The nearest airport is Jorhat but the Guwahati airport has more flights. There are regular bus services from all over the state for Kaziranga but the bus drops till Kohara, which is very close to the park. Apart from the state transport corporation buses, tourist taxis are available as well.

Gangtok
The capital of Sikkim, Gangtok, lies at an altitude 1600
meters. It occupies the west side of a long ridge flanking the Ranipool River. Gangtok has a very spectacular setting and offers excellent views of the entire Kanchenjunga range from various points in its vicinity.

How to Reach:
Gangtok does not have an airfield of its own. The Bagdogra airfield serves the needs of not only Gangtok but of whole Sikkim. From Bagdogra it takes five hours by road to reach Gangtok. The nearest railway stations are those of Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri.
